Introduction
Alan Chandler is Hartley Consultants principal resource. He wrote his first program in the assembler language for a Honeywell mini computer in 1968 as a hobby and shortly afterwards took his first paid employment as a programmer writing software in the Algol programming language. During the 1970's, in a full time career in programming (with Logica) he continued writing Assembly Language software, primarily Real Timesoftware in PDP 11 Assembler Language(Macro 11). He also started working with Databases, including designing databases from scratch (since it was before the development of database packages such as Oracle). He also occassionally used Pascal and Fortran. As he moved into the 1980's, he implemented Version Control and became involved in using Unix as a software development environment. C and, towards the end of the decade,C++, became the languages of choice for most development although occassional work using Visual Basic and Microsoft Access added to his skills.
In the 1990's after initially rising to the role of Chief Engineer, his career moved away from technical work into Business Analysis and Business Development, and he therefore started doing software development as a hobby. Given his previous history, setting up a Linux system was the obvious choice and he started developing web based applications (using HTML and CSS) initially in Java and then in PHP. Generally he used Postgresql as the database of choice. Latterly bringing Javascript based AJAX applications into his armoury he has used SQLite to explore its power and has used MySql as part of the maintenance of SMF based forums (see the Community Forums page).
